Can Someone Please Explain Doctor Training Scheme In Plain English To Me?

my son is born in the UK he completed a MB Chb course in 2004. he then went on to complete his two years foundation course and succesfully got this first training post ST1 now ST2 in Anesthethics. Now there changing the system in August this year. I dont understand how it works. Is he at risk from competition? What is ST1 , ST2 . My son explained it to me but I think he may be talking it up in his favour.
