Flying With Medical Equipment?
I'm planning on flying to Kansas for a month. I need to take my CPAP, and my doctor told me I have to take it as a carry on. Will that count as my one carry on? I've also been told that I have to have a special tag for medical equipment. Can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to do?

According to the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), CPAP machines ARE permitted to be carried onto the plane. It will not count as your one carry-on.
They do need to be screened separately through the security screening process, and taken out of its carrying case, etc. Facemasks and tubing may remain in the carrying case. The TSA website suggests you put your CPAP in a clear zip top bag for inspection (bring your own). They may also do an explosives trace sampling on it. You should give yourself plenty of time to get through the process. You may also want to be a doctor’s note, just in case.
You can get more information at the TSA website: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/s…

In the current environment arm yourself with much patience and arrive at the airport with ample time before your flight.
My dad uses oxygen – he has COPD – and was told over the phone by the airline it was no problem, yet at the ticket counter he was told he could not carry it on. After much discussion, wait, and consulting with supervisors, he was charged an extra $25.00. This varies by airline, by the way.
This was not the end of the saga, however, as at security he had to go through additional checkout, screening and questions.
Be patient, prepared and you’ll be OK.
