How Does Using Radiation To Sterilise Medical Equipment Work ?

i think the radiation mutates the cells , does this kill them because they cannot function properly ? how does it work ? (try to use simple language as i get confused easily THANK YOU)

    The energy of the radiation changes the molecules in the cell, and creates free radicals and other excited molecules. The large amount of water (H2O) contained in any cell gets broken into H and OH, which are strong reducing agents and oxidizing agents respectively. With so many strongly reactive chemicals in the cell body, harmful chemical reactions are bound to happen, which destroys the cell.
