How Long Is Nursing School?
I've currently been disqualified from joining the military for medical reasons. I was strongly considering becoming a nurse. I live in Maryland and was wondering how long nursing school actually is. I have a high school diploma. I also heard the time it takes depends on what kind of nurse you want to become. Can anyone really fill me in? Are male nurses uncommon?

male nurses are not uncommon, It is not 50/50 but you probably won’t be the only one, In my year we have 5/60, that’s not to bad considering that in most of all of my college classes there haven’t been many guys and the area we live in and college I go to a commuter campus off a larger university, where I think we don’t really have as much of your typical college student.
Our actual classes for the BSN take 3 years, the other year is supposed to prereqs. So I suppose however long it takes to get your prereqs. before that (get all required non-nursing classes done before you enter the program or as early as possible. Good Luck, Nursing school sucks!

NUrsing is essentially 2 years of core work. You can get a 4 year degree (a bachelors) which is about 2 years gen ed & pre-reqs and then the core; or an associates degree which is at a community college which again is the 2 years core (and a bit fewer core courses than maybe the 4 year) and however long the pre-reqs take you. In both cases you are able to take the NCLEX exam and become a RN. There are fairly lengthy wait lists to get into these programs however. Male nurses are not uncommon.
