I Am 43 And Want To Return To School For Nursing, Am I Too Old For This Profession?

I have worked in the financial services industry for 20 years. I feel nursing is my calling. I have a 28 , a 23 , a 9 and a 6 year old. I can finally return to school, but is nursing school too difficult with a full time family and a fulltime job? I am thinking about taking a 19 month night course to become a LVN. While working days 7am-4pm.

Nursing is VERY though to study and very tough to balance with family and other full-time obligations once you are a nurse. You can try being a CNA if full-fledged nursing proves to be too much of a burden. I am not a nurse but I have many friends from school who are and their lives are dedicated to their job… Good luck!

No one is too old. And in the end it will be worth it. I am still not sure whether to go for CNA or LVN but my mother who is a nurse says there are always jobs avaliable, you never have to worry about getting a job unless you have bad work ethic, than thats a problem, but if you are really into taking care of people etc….Never too old to start a new career unless you were striving to be a lawyer, you need heaps of energy for that…Plus i have seen 50+yrolds who were in my nursing classes

Nursing is dirty work, if you are used to working in a clean office environment you may not like the poop factor. You are far from old, so I think you should go for it if you desire the wonderful benefit of helping other people and don’t mind extreame multi tasking. Nurses also do everything S.T.N.A.’s do so it might be a good idea to work as an S.T.N.A. first.

By all means go for it. I was a 39 yo freshman. It’s a little strange at first (most of my classmates were 18-19). If you feel it is your calling, when are you going to do it? The workload will be tough, the youngster will be a bit of a handful, but follow your dreams.
BTW I hung around and got my masters.

I completed an accelerated BSN program while maintaining a family (1 wife, 7 kids and 1 cat), a fulltime overnight job and a part-time weekend job. So, yes, it can be done.

  7. Classy Granny Says:

If you have someone that can take care of your 6 & 9 year old while you go to school, go for it. The 19 months will be hard, but the rewards will be great.

  8. JL Says:

No, you are not too old. But why not aim for the RN instead of the LVN?

  9. Lor RN Says:

You are never to old. You just need the determination to go for it, because it will be a very demanding avenue.
But once completed, it will be well worth your efforts.
    GOOD LUCK!
