In A Texas State Of Emergency, Can Hospital Staff Be Forced To Stay?

The Gov. of Texas has declared a state of emergency for the Weather. The Hospital I work for is trying to make ALL the Medical staff stay at least through Sunday. They are preparing beds for us, and are saying we are required BY LAW to stay. Also, they are refusing to pay for the time we are here while not working. Is this Legal?

The other people are idiots. It’s called kidnapping. Where they can not FORCE you to stay how ever it will probably lead to problems during your next review. If you are being forced to stay there then you need to be paid for ever hour spent in the hospital. Sleeping, eating, working, bathroom… you get the point, are all on the clock if you are not allowed to leave. If you are not paid for this I would call a lawyer as soon as you can.

Yes, you should want to stay and help. It’s all part of what you signed up to do when you entered the profession. You can’t just abandon people in an emergency situation. If you don’t like it then quit (after the hurricane) and find another job where lives are not on the line.

If the opportunity to serve during a true emergency doesn’t interest you, quit the job right after the hurricane. Please.
