Lab technologist (vrs technician)?–The bachelor’s degree one? I did this for many years before I moved on. It was a very good sound job. Had the option of shifts, places to work (hospitals, research labs, commercial labs, reference labs, Red Cross, crime labs, etc). We did not wear scrubs. We wore street clothes with lab provided covers that could not leave the lab. You do eveything that comes into a lab–in the hospital that is blood work, cultures, urine, blood bank, HLA-typing, etc. In the crime labs its blood alcohol, toxicology, DNA, etc. In the red cross its blood donor & banking; in reference labs it can be anything including DNA, alcohol, toxicology, virology, regular things, weird things, etc. At the CDC it could be virology, micro, parasites, you name it. You can be a generalist of a specialist. You do need a good knowledge of chemistry, biology etc.
