Anyone work as an Medical Billing and Coding?
Discount Medical Scrubs
I wanted to know your opinion on towards this job? From the perspective from someone that actually works as this. Like what are the benefits of this job, and the bad things. Is there a lot of math involve? If so yes I know there is, but is it hard? How do you dress for this job..business clothes or scrubs? How long does the course take? I want to work in an office... So any ideas??
So many questions! Thanks for the help!

I am a Medical Coder, and I am only 21 years old, I am still in school for this and I am on my last year! I love this work, it does get stressful but it is good money. There isn’t alot of math involved at all, unless your in the billing part. I am strictly a coder but I also put charges in as well because of lack of staff with experience on this end. I wear black dress pants and a dress shirt. You do not wear scrubs for this job. I work in an office and I work for surgeons but we are in a seperate building because we have our own business office. Depending on if you are going for your certificate in coding or degree the amount of time spent on schooling varies. I am going for my degree and I have gone for two years now, and I have 3 semesters left. So I have about 3 1/2 years of coding under my belt. I could have gotten in done in 3 years but I ran into a schedule problem. If you have anymore questions I would be glad to help you, my email is iheartopi@yahoo.com. If you do send an email please make the heading say MEDICAL CODING so that I don’t think it is spam!
Also- I see that alot of people are saying there isn’t a want for medical coders. Maybe it is different in all states because I live in NY and there is a need for them because there aren’t enough people enrolled in college going for medical coding/billing.

Unfortunately, there aren’t supposed to be too many jobs for the medical biller or coder (or medical assistant) despite what those private $$ for-profit tech schools say. There are just too many schools offering the program and not enough job vacancies. Even those schools that tout helping with job placement don’t really have many more leads than the sunday classifieds or job site.
With medical billing, a lot of companies are outsourcing to Asia/India leaving jobs more scarce. Regarding medical coding, in addition to completing an accredited program, getting certification(s) in the field and having a few years experience doing coding tasks, some employers prefer applicants with an associate (two-year) degree in health information (‘medical records) technology. There are still no guarantees as to finding work though even with those credentials.
If you’re still interested in training, please consider the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college as long as the program is accredited within the industry.
