Calling all nurses! What are the most important things you learned in nursing school?

Discount Medical Scrubs

I would like to know what the most important things were that you learned in nursing school. I am currently attending, and the volume of information is so overwhelming that I have a hard time picking out what is really important. Obviously it is all important, but could you help me find an appropriate focus? Hindsight being 20/20 I look forward to all of your opinions.

The most important thing to learn in nursing school is priotorization and delegation if you learn those concepts everything else falls into place.

I have learned that I am not going to keep everything that I was taught, nor do I need to. I know my part of nursing well enough and I work hard to keep up with it. I no longer remember pediatrics, micro, ob/gyn, advanced psych, and I am OK in a number of other areas so that I know enough to know when I have no idea. Then I am VERY comfortable calling someone for help…as they call me.

Remeber to learn the information so that you can get through school, then remeber to start to learn how to put together a system for time management and judging priorities. Give the teachers back what they are looking for, period. If you are spending time worried about after you graduate, try not to, it wastes your time and really doesn’t do any good or have any effect other then to wear you out.

You really need to know everything..especially dosage calculations, reading orders…but..the most important..how to chart and what you are charting! chart only the facts and know what charting system different places use!! Charting, medications and dosage calculations would be the most important to focus on..then you cant go wrong…but you better know your anatomy and how things work so you know what symptoms to look for.

I recall mainly the APIE principle. Nursing Care plan is another. Most important is communication skills and thought processes.
    A: Assessment
    P: Planning
