Paresis: 1 Incomplete paralysis. 2 A form of neurosyphilis (syphilis affecting the central nervous system — the brain and spinal cord). Also known as general paresis, neurolues, acute syphilitic meningitis, meningovascular syphilis, tabes dorsalis, and the great pox. First recognized in Europe as a distinct epidemic in Naples in the late 1400s coincident with the invasion of Naples by the French. The dispersal of the debauched French mercenary army throughout Western Europe led to the frighteningly fast spread of the new disease.
Pathogenic: Causing disease or capable of doing it.
Pathogenic bacteria are disease-causing bacteria. For example, pathogenic E. coli are E. coli that are not innocuous (like most E. coli) but can make a person ill and even kill them.
The word "pathogenic" comes from two Greek roots: "pathos" (disease) + "genesis" (bringing into being) = literally, bringing disease into being.
Percutaneous liver biopsy: A liver biopsy that is done through the skin with a needle. A percutaneous liver biopsy is in contrast, for example, to an open surgical biopsy of the liver. See: Liver biopsy
Pericardium: The conical sac of fibrous tissue that surrounds the heart and the roots of the great blood vessels. The pericardium’s outer coat (the parietal pericardium) is tough and thickened, loosely cloaks the heart, and is attached to the central part of the diaphragm and the back of the breastbone. Its inner coat (the visceral pericardium or epicardium) is double, with one layer closely adherent to the heart and the other lining the inner surface of the outer coat. The intervening space between these layers is filled with pericardial fluid. This small amount of fluid acts as a lubricant to allow normal heart movement within the chest.
Also known as the pericardial sac. See also: Pericarditis.
Polypsis of the colon: Multiple polyps with a high malignant potential in the large bowel. This hereditary condition is also known as polypsis coli and Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP).
