Going to school to get a degree in nursing is difficult enough, but perhaps even more challenging is finding a job in a hospital or health center after you graduate. However, newly minted nurses are not the only individuals struggling to find jobs in the nursing field. Experienced nurses who have left or are considering leaving their current positions are also in need of a way to find new job opportunities. That is where nursing career fairs come in.

Nursing career fairs give both new and experienced nurses alike the opportunity to talk to representatives of different hospitals, organizations, and private practices across the healthcare industry. These events give prospective nurses and those experienced but looking for work the ability to find out just what opportunities are available, and also allows for networking with others within the nursing field.  In order to get the most out of the experience and present the best image as possible, the following are a few things that you should keep in mind when attending a nursing career fair.

Update Your Resume

One of the very first things you should do while preparing yourself for a nursing career fair is to take the time to update your resume a few days beforehand. This way you will be less rushed and much less likely to make mistakes that can hurt your job search success. Once you have finished updating, be sure to read your resume over a few times in order to check for misspellings or other errors. Doing this will also help you to have the details of your resume fresh in your mind so that you can quickly and seamlessly answer questions concerning your professional and educational experience.

Rehearse Answers to Likely Questions

In addition to being prepared to answer questions concerning your resume, make sure that you are prepared for questions regarding your likes or dislikes as well as personal background.  There is no way of knowing in advance just what questions representatives of hospitals or other healthcare centers will ask you at a career fair. While most of the questions will be related to your professional skill sets and prior experience, you should always be open and equally prepared for the possibility that personal questions will be asked of you as well.

These questions are generally asked by interviewers to ensure that new nurses will fit in with the overall attitude and culture of the work environment they would be entering and can often make or break a hiring decision if a candidate is teetering on the edge. It is also important to always be friendly and professional when answering the questions that interviewers and representatives ask you. Be sure that you do not use “textbook” answers, but rather well thought out responses that allow your personality to shine while still displaying your knowledge about the field.

Look the Part

It is also extremely important to carefully choose the clothes that you plan on wearing to the career fair.  Attire plays a big supporting role in your interview and will often be judged very critically. Clothing should look professional, be clean, appropriately sized, and wrinkle-free. Also, be sure that the clothing you pick is comfortable and is not too hot or cool for the weather. Even though the career fair will most likely take place indoors, you would not want to end up with sweat-stained clothing from wearing heavy clothes when it is hot outside, or be cold and uncomfortable with lighter weight clothing during cooler weather.  Nursing uniforms generally combine style with practicality, so make sure that you use the same considerations when choosing your clothes for the nursing career fair.

Make the Most of You Time

Another thing to keep in mind while attending a nursing career fair is that you should talk to as many representatives and interviewers as possible while you are there.  Even if you have a specific hospital or practice in mind that you really want to work for, take the time to network and inquire about as many job opportunities as you can. Networking is consistently cited as being the number one way to get a job and is all about building contacts and alliances. It is a good practice to continually network and not just when you are out of work and looking for a new job.

It is also a good idea to bring extra resumes with you so that you can give them to the representatives of a practice or group that you find at least somewhat interesting.  You never know when an unexpected opportunity will arise, and by getting your resume to as many people as possible you will greatly increase your chances of landing a quality nursing job. You may also find yourself able to make some worthwhile contacts that can be useful later in your professional career
