I'm stuck on picking a major. I'm going to be starting college soon and Idk what to do.?
Discount Medical Scrubs
I know I want to do something in the medical field. i want to wear scrubs, haha. But I don't want to go to med school. I absolutely hate school, and I wish I could be done with it(but I know i can't for the profession i want). I was thinking physical therapy (assistant?), or Optomologist (i'm not sure of the schooling for that), or a surgical technician (hands the surgeons the tools..i heard it pays a lot and doesn't take lots of school), or a radiologist? I'm stuck! I get really good grades, I'm in the top of my class...and i'm pretty confident that I could do whatever I wanted..but I can't choose.

I would start with seeing your guidance counselor. Consider taking a personality inventory such as the Meyers Briggs personality inventory. It will help to highlight your strengths, how you learn and what type of careers you may be suited for. Health care is definetely something where you have to put your heart into your education…for the patient’s benefit.
However, you have chosen some careers that have a wide variety of education. Technical and assistant professional careers usually require less education. This would include physical therapy assistant and surgical technician. These are both usally two year degrees and both are paid similar…in the $35-45,000 a year range. Other considerations would include radiology technician…depending on how many different cerfitications you want to do, you can earn well in excess of $50-60,000 a year. Finally there is nursing…while it is offered as a BS, it is still offered as an associate’s degree.
Some of the other careers you have chosen require a doctorate level education including opthalmologist, optometrist and radiologist. If you are sure you do not want to be in school for the long haul, avoid these careers.
If you are a good student, it would be a shame to limit yourself to a technical career where you will reach your career potential very quickly. However, I think you may find that when you actually find sometime you LIKE, your career specific courses can be quite enjoyable. Or perhaps, you would be suited to do your career in stages? You can start with an associates in nursing, practice for awhile, progress to a BSN, then master’s…just a consideration.

One of my high school teachers recently held a high school conference. He added, at the end, that his eldest daughter is a junior in college and still doesn’t know what she wants to do for sure. Don’t rush, let it simmer and think about it. It’s you’re life and you don’t want to waste money having to go back to college because you rushed yourself into a decision.

talk to ur guidance counselor and she’ll give you many options. it’s hard choosing. but keep in mind that whatever you choose you dont have to end up doing forever. u can always change ur major and also you can go with no major to a school where they show u different fields and then you can choose.
good luck
