Question about Scrubs?

Discount Medical Scrubs

In the show, JD lives with Turk and Carla in a small apartment. I was just wondering why a surgeon and a medical doctor (and a full time head nurse) can only afford a small apartment? I know they're residents but still, would they really make that little?
Geez...I guess you really gotta be dedicated to be a doctor. I'm sure that the show exaggerates it a lot so that they can stay in the apartment together...I mean how interesting would the show be if Turk and Carla lived in their own home and JD had his own apartment...we saw how bored Turk and Carla were when they temporarily kicked JD out.

And yeah, it was stupid how JD couldn't even afford to get a hotel room for a week when they kicked him out. Again, it's just a fictitious show, though.

But still...becoming a doctor consists of 8 years of tough school, another 4 years of learning, paying off debts and working 60 hour weeks, and then if your debts are paid off you can finally start living a little although you're still married to your job. Pretty crazy.

The first years of most medical students coming out of college is spent in debt. In Turk’s case he’s been training for like 8+ years, though i do find it funny that they don’t have a lot of money…

I always thought that was kinda odd…even in later seasons JD is STILL battling with homelessness—-as an ATTENDING!

man apartments in Cali(if that is where they are due to sea world being so close) are freakin expensive they could be making some decent money and still not afford it…well as a resident as an attending maybe.

well one episode explains it really well. In "My Fruit Cups" JD explains basically how many debts a doctor has coming out of college and medical school and how little a doctor makes to pay off those debts. and he even says thea they make about as much money as a waiter.
Its a great episode and it you watch it you shall laugh and understand. lol

Residents don’t make much and JD and Turk had to pay for Med school, Elliott’s parents were paiying for tuition and her apartment for her.
