What College Degree Programs Are Okay To Apply With To Become A Usmc Officer? I Hear Not Nursing School?
I am currently in Nursing school, and I hear that the USMC won't take you becuase that is a useless degree, and they would'nt be able to use my skills. Is this true? And if it is, what sort of degree do I need to get then? I was under the impression that any 4 year college degree was just fine...
Thanks,
-Katie

It doesn’t matter….you need a bachelor’s degree and the Corps doesn’t really care what it is in. I know that Army and Air Force ROTC scholarships are given based on discipline, and the Navy has no requirements, but favors technical degrees, but the Marines just want a degree.
I haven’t used one bit of my criminology degree to fly helicopters.

would you really want a jar head to be taking your vitals?

I am a Navy Nurse, and it is the Navy who provides medical for the Marines. If you are set on becoming a Marine officer they want either technical degrees (engineering, etc) or managment, or international studies. Many General/Flag officers have PHD’s in things like international studies or political science. If you want to be a RN and serve with Marines then you have to go NAVY.

any degree can be useless I suppose,,, it depends on the student , as to what he or she does with their knowledge ,, the health care field is wide open now with so many wounded from Iraq, requiring lifelong care in many cases, the elderly health care needs,,,and the mentally challenged,,,

Not sure if there are any nurses in The Corps. There damn sure are in the Navy, though.
If you want to know for sure, ask a Marine recruiter.

They won’t take you because there is no Marine Medical & never has. All Medical services are done by the US NAVY. The USMC is part of the Navy Dept. All Corpmen, Docs, & nurses are Navy.

Nurses serving with Marines are from the Navy (as with all medical, dental and legal services)…check with the Navy. A four year degree will obtain the rank of ensign or with experience perhaps a Lieutenant junior grade.

If you graduate with a bachelor’s degree (i.e. becoming a RN), then you can apply to the USMC OCS.
If you don’t receive a bachelor’s degree (i.e. becoming a LPN), then you can’t.

I am sure you are probably all Gung Ho about the USMC but have you thought about the Army. They have a ton of nurses and need more. Plus they view your degree as highly desirable and will bend over backwards to accomodate you. The USMC doesn’t really do Medical stuff so you are kind of screwed on that front. There is no specific degree you will need to get a commission in the USMC but there are a few they probably won’t take. I think Nursing, Divinity or Biblical Studies, is about all that is off limits.
