Choosing a career, Please help! I don't know if it is 100% right for me.?
Discount Medical Scrubs
I am going to Oklahoma City Community College next year for a Medical Assistant job but I hate math. I know they have to dispense some meds so I'm wondering if there is alot of math involved. As long as I have a calculator, should I be alright?
I do okay with blood and needles and such. But my sister told me that if I become a medical assistant I have to have my fellow students poke me and draw my blood. Is that true?
Also, I am looking for a mentor. If you know anyone who is a Medical Assistant and could offer me some advice I would love to get their email from you. I need some advice from someone who is in the career.
Oh, and one more thing, Do you get to wear scrubs if you are a Medical Assistant?

There is probably math involved in the program, but the best way to find out is to see what classes they require. Check the college catalog. You won’t be able to use a calculator on the job. But generally it’s the nurse or doctor who does the math, not the MA.
Yes, you will probably practice blood draws on each other.
Contact the college for referral to possible mentors.
As for the scrubs, it depends on where you are working. Doctors offices usually have some kind of white uniform, hospitals vary a lot.
If you aren’t sure what career is right for you, think about what you enjoy doing a lot and then figure out what kind of career has that as a big part of it.

I am a medical assistant, graduated from a vocational career school. Yes, you need to practice drawing blood on your classmates and they will practice on you to. You will need scrubs, a blood pressure kit and basic math knowledge. In school they will teach you medical terminology, to perform finger pricks to check patient’s blood glucose level and yes, you get to practice on your classmates and they on you, how to perform EKGs ( electrocardiograms) which means you have to be ready to take off your shirt and bra to be practiced on.

I can only answer two of your questions.
1) Most Associate of applied science degree’s require basic college algebra to be taken. To find out what types of math you must take, check out your college catalog for a complete listing of classes.
2) If you will be working around patients, you will be required to wear scrubs.
