Do I have to go to nursing school first in order to become a nurse practitioner (NP)?
Discount Medical Scrubs
I am a freshmen at Boston University and am planning to stay here for 4 years while taking pre-reqs in order to apply for nursing school.
After that, what exactly are the steps to become a NP and how much school do I have to go through from here on.

Yes, you have to be a nurse first. Why don’t you inquire at the nursing school about the steps required to become a nurse practitioner?

I agree; why waste 4 years on pre-reqs?
You need to be in a BSN-RN program. Make sure you aren’t wasting your time.
After you graduate, you’ll have to get experience in critical care for at least a year or 2, then apply to graduate school for NP; there is a move to convert to a doctoral program, so by then the requirments will be different than now.

Well, yes. But, if you want to go to nursing school, why are you wasting four years getting a Bachelor’s degree in something else? You should apply for a nursing school where you can earn a BSN and then apply for an NP graduate program. Very little of your Bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts area is going to count toward a BSN. If you want to do "gen ed" courses, you’d be better off doing that at a community college, where it will cost less.

Why would you waste 4 years getting a degree in something else? You must have tons of money.
If you want to become an NP you must get your BSN and then get at least 2 years nursing experience before you can apply to the NP Masters program. These programs are VERY hard to get into so many candidates have much more than 2 years experience before they get in.As of 2015 the requirement for an NP becomes a PhD.
