Does being a nurse have to be boring?
Discount Medical Scrubs
I have been thinking of becoming a psychiatric nurse but the problem is I have a very, well... unique style. Now scrubs don't bother me at all because I know in a medical environment those are pretty much a must however I want to know about hair. I have heard that some places let the nurses have have blue, purple, or cherry bomb red hair and such. I don't have any facial piercings (though I am planing on getting my nose pierced soon.
Now when I was younger I was in a psychiatric unit and a few nurses there had eyebrow piercings and platinum blonde hair. I never saw a nurse with purple hair there but I read about a woman online who is allowed to have it. Is this because the psychiatric units are more lenient with this? Is this common in most psychiatric units or were these women just lucky?
I would greatly appreciate any ideas because I am trying very hard to find a career path where I can be myself and I really love nursing but if I have to be "Stuffy" then I am just going to go to school for cosmetology which is another thing I have always wanted to do. I would love to be able to do both someday possibly but who knows.
Any answers would be great. ![]()
I am 19 years old and still thinking of what I want to do before I go off to school.
Just to answer the questions. I woukdn't care if a nurse had purple hair taking care of me. Hair color doesn't mean someone isn't caring or compassionate or genuine. I'm one of the nicest people out there and I LOVE science and chemistry and anatomy and physiology. I always go A's in those classes and I enjoyed them. But I also want to be able to be myself somewhat. Sorry of that bothers you.
And to the girl that said my being in a mental hospital says alot maybe you shouldn't be so quick to judge people. You don't even know WHY I was there or how long ago it even was.
I intend to be a hair dresser and maybe I will go to school for nursing or psychology that way I can get a degree and then when I feel like doing it I will have the knowledge behind me.
Thanks for the answers though.

I’ve never heard of nurses with such strange hair and stuff. Some hospitals may allow it, I don’t know. But i disagree with all these people saying the job wouldn’t be "for you". I’m pretty unique too and i want to be a nurse so I think all those people are pretty stupid, but then again only you know if the job is for you.
Good Luck!!?

If piercings and hair color are that important to you, nursing probably isn’t for you. Even with the nursing shortage, you will have problems with your intended look.

When you are a nurse such as I am you are around all kinds of people from very young to very old and need to be appropriatly dressed so you dont scare these people and so you look professional so you can get thier trust. If someone walked in with a face full of metal and blue hair and wanted to touch me with a needle I would run screaming from the hospital. But it is a must for 99% of places that a nurse works for you to be tattoo free have no public piercings exept in your ears and only two holes per ear. And there are always guidelines for your hair as well. At the hospital I work you must wear all white scrubs have your hair in a pony tail, no perfume, no tattoos visible, and piercings only in the ears.

i think nursing is not the right profession that you should follow. your personality is not adaptable to the work, but the second choice you got I think it’s more appropriate for you to follow.

Being a nurse means working for an employer who expects you to be professional, and have a clean respectable appearance. You are representing your employer (the hospital, the school, the doctors office, where you work).
Would YOU want a nurse taking care of you with pink and purple hair? I would want my nurse to look professional and not look like medusa in a rock band.
Remember that nurses have a certain reputation to up hold, and they are expected to be a certain type of person. A responsible person. People that have certain looks don’t give off this type of idealogy.
Every employer will have rules and regulations regarding how you can dress, if you can have piercings, and yes if your hair color is not a normal color.
