Is getting your GED a bad thing if you are going into nursing school?
Discount Medical Scrubs
I am a senior in highschool. I plan on graduating, although I am behind in credits. If i do not finish in time, i planned to get my GED so I can start my nurses classes at a community college instead of waiting another year. Are there any disadvantages in nursing school if I got my GED instead of my highschool diploma? Is getting a highschool diploma very important when it comes to getting nursing jobs in the future? Thanks so much!

Please go to the website for the community college, and check out the pre-requisite classes you need to have taken before you can get into the nursing major. Often, in order to get directly into the nursing major in community college, you need to have taken a certain level of math in HS, and to have taken a certain level of biology – perhaps even AP bio. If you don’t have those classes, then you won’t be admitted directly into the nursing major. Instead, you’d need to enter the college and do those classes there. Of course there, you’re paying for those classes – while in HS, it’s free. So that’s really something you need to check into and think about – is it possible for you to stay in HS and finish up those classes, so you can get directly into the nursing major at the cc?
In other words, getting your GED without having those classes won’t save you any time. In fact, it may make your "time situation" worse, because if you place low in the cc’s math placement test, you’ll have to start out in remedial (high school level or below) math, and you won’t even be allowed to take the bio class you need until you get into college-level math. I’ve seen it take some people years to finally get to apply to the nursing major. So seriously, if you can do this math and bio coursework in HS, do it. It’ll save you time, even if you end up taking extra time to graduate HS.
