Just curious as to why Nurses no longer wear caps?
Discount Medical Scrubs
My mom was a nurse back in the 50's and when I attended college in the 80's I had a lot of friends who were nursing students. Getting "capped" and having the ceremony was deal. Now when I go to hospitals you cant' tell the doctors from the nurses since they all wear scrubs...well everybody and their brother and sister can wear scrubs now. My daughter expressed an interest in nursing and she asked me why nurses no longer where the original attire. My mom said back in the day you had to change your clothes when you got to work, now nurses and other medical professionals can just step out of their car and go right to work. I just want to know what happened in the last 20 years or so. I have tons of respect for nurses so I don't' want to rub anyone the wrong way...maybe it's just a California thing (I am originally from back east)! Thanks!!
I meant to say "the ceremonies were a big deal"

According to this article, they are still worn in some places but most hospitals got rid of them over concerns about them being carriers of germs and bacteria. I understand that male doctors are now being discouraged from wearing ties for the same reason.

thats technically not true that they dont wear caps and they ALL wear scrubs…. i work at a hospital and some nurses do wear caps and the nurses wear scrubs while the doctors wear white coats….so really it all depends on the hospitals dress code….its modern day now, and scrubs are more comfortable and easier to work in. it doesnt make it a bad thing to wear scrubs along with the caps. they are just more wearable and comfortable i suppose…..

THE UNIFORM CHANGED BECAUSE WEARING A SKIRT , AND A CAP TO WORK, WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR ON THE GO, AND NOT TO MENTION THE ITCHY PANTYHOSE THAT MADE EVERYONE SWEAT. NURSES GET ALL KINDS OF STAINS ON THEIR CLOTHES AND WEARING A WHITE UNIFORM ISN’T REALLY IDEAL. WE STILL DO A CEREMONY EVERY TIME A STUDENT GRADUATES NURSING SCHOOL, BUT INSTEAD OF WEARING A CAP WE USE A NIGHTINGALE PIN, WHICH IS JUST AS SPECIAL.
