My Parents Won't Support Me Of My Dream Career?

Discount Medical Scrubs

I want to become a Cardiothoracic Surgeon one day,
and my mom hasn't been so supportive. My parents
they are both in the medical field; My Mom an RN Nurse,
and Dad as a Scrub Nurse (a specially trained nurse who works with surgeons and the medical team in the operating room.) So my parents know pretty much about
what Surgeons do... My mom keeps saying just be a nurse like her
but i honestly don't want to. She's always saying about how much money
it would cost and how many years it would take and just discouraging me
even though she says she's not. I know how much money it will take, we
have enough for Undergraduate Work but not a lot for Med School that's why
i might be getting a loan. I told her about getting a loan and started this whole
argument of how many years it would take to pay it off even with a huge salary
because of the tax deduction... I mean i honestly don't care if i'm in a million dollars
dept as long as i can do something to make a change into a persons life...
I don't care how long it takes to go to school, and i honestly couldn't care
how much money i would be making. But the pay would be nice, for all those
100+ Hours a Week... So what do i do? I feel like giving in and happen to become
a nurse and regret it for the rest of my life... :(

If you are paying for your own college, you can do whatever you want. Don’t let your parents or anyone put down your dreams. Stick with what you want to do. You sound like you really want to do it, so don’t let anyone put you into doing something you aren’t passionate about.

It’s great that you want to make changes in peoples lives. You can do it!:) Even if it means you’ll have to work hard for it! Good luck.

My parents won’t support me either… nothing new. Just do it!

The first two years of college you do not have to commit and studies are generalized. Just keep in mind your goal and start working on it. Keep your grades excellent and apply for scholarships not loans. Don’t fight about it, just continue to softly let them know where your interest lie.

Your life is your life, and you need to presue your dreams! Everyone only gets on chance to live thier life right, and because of college costs, one carrer choice as well. You should do what you want to do with your future life! (concidering it is legit and responsible)

Don’t ever listen to peoples advice if if it’s not what YOU want, because at the end of the day, it’s your life and they’re not the ones who have to live it, YOU are, and it’s not what you really want. If you believe you can do it, don’t listen to them. Just do what makes you happy and ignore them. Don’t just become a nurse like them if it’s not what you want, because you will end up miserable and regretting. Your whole life you will be wondering "What if?"

Follow your dream! I graduated college in 5 years, and have about 40k in loans. I cannot find a job so I am currently getting my MBA, which is 20k for the whole program. On top of insurance, car payments, and credit card bills, my bills aren’t the greatest, but in the end it will all pay off. You will be lucky to have parents helping out with your undergrad, because many folks have to do it on their own, like I did. You may end up with 100+ thousand dollars in debt but guess what, you’ll be making 3 times what a nurse will be. Go for it!

I think the most important question here isn’t money. Well, for your parents it is. They are probably scared and it’s understandable. But have you ever wondered how much more responsibility a surgeon has than the nurses. Nurses are there to help and do what they are told. But if something happens, the surgeon is the one who will be blamed. You can’t expect to be successful in every case, so how would a failure affect you emtionally? Could you take it without blaming yourself too much? I know someone in that field and he had the (cold) heart to always give good excuses when people died, even though it was his fault because he wasn’t concentrating. So he hasn’t been caught so far. But for someone who cares about people the way you do, it can be very hard. On the other hand, if you don’t mind the fact that you might see people die, it’s always a corageous thing to do. And the world surely needs good surgeons. So, if you want to become one, make sure you do your best in school. If you’re good, there’s a better chance you’ll have fewer sad episodes.

Your parents do not have to support this for it to become a reality. My parents were abusive and never supported anything I did, but I still got 2 degrees on my own without their help. Just believe in yourself. Giving in will only make you resent them for life, in fact it is an excuse to fail. So you need to ask yourself if you really want it or not. If you did nothing would stop you.
